Festival Island

In 1970 the biggest pop festival ever to take place in the UK was held on Afton Down on the Island. Six-hundred thousand festival goers descended on the Island for the five day event, despite the then Island MP Mark Woodnut declaring ?the health of everyone on the Ilse of Wight will be endangered?. Fortune smiled on the festival goers providing great weather to match the great performances from artists like The Moody blues, Joni Mitchell, The Who, Leonard Cohen, The Doors, Emerson Lake Palmer & rather poignantly The Great Jimi Hendricks for whom it was his last filmed performance before his death two weeks later. After the festival an Act of Parliament, the ?Isle of Wight Act?, banned such large gatherings happening on the Island again. However since 2002 many festivals have taken place regularly on the Island albeit with fewer number of attendees.
