Isle of Wight Holiday Blog

Wanting to get involved with all the Island has to offer? Here are our favourite Summer events.

Thursday 2nd June 2016

The Clifton Hotel in Shanklin is a perfect base for an Isle of Wight holiday. We pride ourselves on being a wonderful location in Shanklin that provides a relaxing atmosphere with modern, clean rooms and all the facilities that you’d ever need, but we know that a real holiday is made by the memories that you make and the experiences that you have.

Here at The Clifton, we’ve outlined three of our absolute favourite summertime events to visit here on the Island.

Festival of the Sea – Appley Beach, 18 June to 3rd July 2016

The Festival of the Sea is the perfect place to sit back, relax, and enjoy the Isle of Wight’s nautical heritage. Whether you just want to stop at the beachside cafes and enjoy a fresh seafood platter, or you want to take the whole family and enjoy some Pirate-themed shipwreck fun on Appley Beach, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

During the Festival of the Sea, the world famous JP Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Yacht Race will take place on the 2nd of July and see over 1600 boats make their way around the Island. We’d recommend viewing from our garden on the cliff top – or reserving some good seats at a beachside restaurant or café to watch the boats pass by.

Cowes Week – Cowes, 6 to 13 August 2016
Arguably one of the biggest Island events outside of the festivals is Cowes Week. The 8-day sailing regatta takes place on the first week in August in Cowes, and transforms the tiny seaside town into a hub of buzzing entertainment, sporting achievement and lively entertainment.

With around 1000 boats taking part every single year, with entrants descending on the Island from all over the world, it’s an atmosphere that is unparalleled in the Sailing world. Each day of Cowes Week there are 40 races, seeing Olympic level racers competing and also racers who are amateurs, too.

Cowes Week always completes on the final day with a spectacular fireworks show.
Whether you’d like to get involved in the racing, or simply enjoy the atmosphere that Cowes Week brings, it’s certainly worth a visit.

The Garlic Festival – Near Newchurch, 20 to 21 August 2016
A firm favourite of the staff here at The Clifton is August’s Garlic Festival held in Sandown, just a short drive or bus ride away from us here in Shanklin. The Garlic Festival provides visitors and locals alike with wonderful food to sample, fantastic entertainment to enjoy and artisan gifts and local produce to take back home.

The Garlic Farm combines cookery workshops with mouth-watering food, an array of arts and crafts stalls and showcases from local businesses and plenty to do for the little ones too with animal acts, archery shows and even a fun fair on site.
